My Favorite Primer and Foundation for Acne-Prone Skin | Ask a Beauty Editor

So, I’m going to cheat a little bit on this question. Personally, I prefer a tinted moisturizer over foundation. I’ve always found that even the most lightweight foundations can make my skin freak out. With a tinted moisturizer, I get the same natural-looking coverage while also getting the skin-care benefit of moisturizer.

My go-to is Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer Skin Perfector Broad Spectrum SPF 30. I like to squeeze a nickel-size amount of product onto my hand and use my fingers from my other hand to apply and blend all over my face; it makes it look more seamless than using a brush. In the end, it looks like I’m not even wearing makeup, plus it gives me a nice dewy finish. It contains ingredients like macadamia and kakui seed oil for moisture and tamarind seed extract to protect the skin from environmental aggressors.

If a tinted moisturizer is still too sheer for acne that you want to cover completely, I’d reach for a concealer to put over those specific spots — let the rest of your skin breathe. But if you’re still looking for a foundation, we’ve rounded up the best options for oily and acne-prone skin here.
