Vegans can rejoice as everyone’s favourite high street bakery Greggs is launching a vegan-friendly version of its famous sausage roll. Greggs’ best selling item is its sausage roll, selling on average 1.5 million of them every week. The UK has seen an influx of veganism in recent years, with a record number of people signing up for Veganuary this New Year. More than 250,000 people have signed up for veganism for the New Year and 140,000 people alone pledged to go vegan for the first month of 2019.
Greggs’ vegan sausage roll has been created to mirror some of their best seller’s classic features, including 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry.
However, the filling is instead made with a bespoke Quorn filling.
The pastry is even vegan-friendly too, with a Greggs spokesperson telling Express.co.uk: “We have removed the milk-based glaze, used to help make the pastry of our original sausage roll golden once baked.
“We made a conscious decision to leave the Vegan Sausage Roll without a glaze, making the lattice design more prominent and allowing a clearer difference between the two sausage rolls.”
The vegan sausage roll will hit shelves tomorrow (Thursday 3rd January) in selected stores across the nation.
Greggs’ decision to launch the vegan treat comes after a high customer demand for a vegan version of its popular sausage roll and a petition by PETA.
PETA’s petition was signed by more than 20,000 people.
Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said they have been trying for a while to create a vegan-friendly product, and the special edition of the sausage roll was a huge hit with taste testers.
He said: “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a Vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.
“It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”
The vegan sausage roll will be on sale in 950 Greggs shops across the country from tomorrow.
Prices for the snack will start from £1.
Greg have made a video to celebrate the launch, revealing in the clip the sausage roll has a whopping 96 layers of puff pastry.
News of the new snack has thrilled vegans, with many taking to Twitter to express their excitement.
“T-minus 2 days until a Greggs vegan sausage roll, I am buzzing,” tweeted one person, while another said: “Greggs is launching a vegan sausage roll, what a time to be alive.”
“Greg is selling a special vegan sausage roll. There really is no excuse now #veganuary!” wrote a third.
Organisers of the vegan initiative believe 2019 will be the year of the vegan.
Many food shops and supermarkets have been quick to catch on, with Waitrose recently launching a new range of vegan products.
